Re: Gray-B-Gon wind-powered evapotron for graywater disposal
Sun, July 19, 2009 - 11:40 PMI think this is a better system overall:
eplaya.burningman.com/viewtopic.php
The only reports of issues I have found include pump breakage (using a cheapo wally-world pump instead of a marine grade pump designed to handle dirty nasty water), cleanup and transport of the kiddie pool and plywood, and trouble scaling the pump to the right size to get even flow. I believe based on the specs that the eplaya thread is talking about a Rule 1500 GPH pump as it is the only one I can find that fits the spec.
I am working on such a system for this year and will be using a wind sensor from automatic watering systems to ensure that the pump turns off in high wind and a float switch so it turns off when empty so as not to kill the pump running it dry. The idea is to make it as automatic as possible in case people from other camps use it to dump their water as this is what happened with my evap pond in past years. I am also using an inflatable pool to make it smaller to pack in and out and am contemplating hinging the top disk and then covering with black plastic so the top will be easily packable and burnable in one of the burn platforms and the plastic and pool can be easily broken down after the event.
I will be using a two pump system, one pump to empty the shower pan into the pool and the other pump to power the fountain with the transport pump (being used for only brief periods of time) as a backup for the fountain pump in case something goes wrong with the primary pump.
On a side note we are considering joining a theme camp this year but have not decided yet. Are Karma Chickens going this year? -

What Karma Chickens are using in 2009
Wed, August 26, 2009 - 9:48 PMHey, WaterDrago-
Sorry I haven't been following tribe at all this year. (We have an email mailing list that has been handling the bulk of our traffic this year.)
I'm the guy who has been working on the Karma Chickens' grey water evap fountain for the last couple of years, and our system is based on the same one you linked to. I would be very interested in seeing your setup. I have often thought of some sort of wind-activated shut-down (rotary encoders attached to anemometers? Microswitches and a flappy-type thing?). But I think I might have come up with a really simple, design-based solution. Drop by the camp to check it out. We're going to be on Extinct somewhere between 7:30 and 7:45. Look for the big piebald (multi-colored) dome. We have "Water and Power System Walk-Throughs" scheduled for 11am Weds and Fri, but if you can't make it then, wander into the camp and ask for Chip (me) or Jack or Brad or Tim, and whoever is available can give you an idea of what we tried and how it's working out.
Looking forward to meeting you-
Chip
