Karma Chickens!,

Sorry for the short notice. I am seeking volunteers for this Saturday’s Karma Chicken Dome building Day! As I have mentioned before, my intention is to build a much stronger dome to replace the one that got all bent up in the wind/dust storm and hammock testing last year. This Saturday (August 4th) Milo has allowed me(us) to use his dad’s workshop to build another dome for the Karma Chickens. I will require 2 to 4 people willing to help ALL day long this Saturday. The workshop is up country so we will leave as soon as possible on Saturday morning. I am happy to have anyone that wants to help just stay the night Friday night.

I’m stoked that we’ve got this day to work on it as the new dome as it will be ready for use for the Karma Chicken fund maker party.

Please post here or call me if you are able to assist.

Thanks,
~Mark

I'm a little frustrated by this call to help; I would like to help but I need more than 4 days of notice for requests like this.

The dome appeared plenty strong enough. I would suggest just repairing the busted struts would be sufficient as long as the hammock doesn't get overloaded this year. I don't think the wind had anything to do with the damage to the dome. (Personally I suggest not putting up the hammock at all.)

What kind of tools does Milo's Dad have? If he has a hydraulic press, then that's great. The worst part about making EMT struts for me has been the flattening of the ends, and a press would REALLY help. I tried a vice and it was just too slow.

If he just has a hacksaw, sledge, and drill, well, I could build replacement struts for the busted ones here on my own if you tell me the lengths required for the struts and from bolt-hole center to bolt-hole center and the EMT diameter. I have a hacksaw good for metal and a minisledge good for flattening EMT ends and a pretty good 5/8-inch metal drill bit; I made 22 EMT struts including holes drilled in the centers of the struts in about three hours two weekends ago.

If you want to do it in Sac, can we maybe commit a few people to repairing damaged struts on Saturday the 11th? I'd be happy to join in with my tools.

(As an aside, I also have a MAPP-gas torch I just used to make 1/2-inch check-mark rebar stakes... If anyone needs to borrow it for more stakes or, better, to soften EMT ends before hammering, I'm happy to bring it up on the 11th.)

sweet... thanks for offering your help and tools.

...again sorry for the sort notice...

I've been planning on making a new, stronger, dome ever since we made the first one in 2003. The two 23ft , ... 3/4in. EMT domes we have aren't strong enough to really clime on or building anything on the top of. They are GREAT for shade and shelter but I've got some really great "look out" ideas that I'd love to build one of these years. Also I know the current strength of the domes we have are not going to be able to handle the hammock with very many people. That's way I am not putting up the hammock in one of the domes we already have. That's way I am making a new one. I love the idea of the large hammock and I am looking forward to make it work... and it working with 18 people in it...

I am totally down with rebuilding the parts we need to fix the dome that got a few strut bent up. I know it would not be too hard and I definitely welcome it. That means that we will have three domes to possibly use in the camp.

Anyway, I've got to get off to work now. I'll dig up the measurements to the dome struts very soon as I will be needing them soon too.

      Brad,
Please PM me your number so we can chat more about it all.
