The weather is fine and the water is warm, come up to Grass Valley chickens one and all to enjoy a day on the Yuba River! Tucked in between two mountains with nothing but pine trees for company, it is clear fresh water with smooth rounded rocks and outcrops for both the daredevil diver and the ...er... chicken. Lunch could be of the picnic variety (small carry-out pots of healthy meals are purchasable on our way to the river) whilst dinner could be at one of the fine eating establishments boasted by the town.
A suggested date for such a fine venture is Saturday 9th August - a week on Saturday. The proposed spot of indulgence is a 20 min hike from the road and there is some scrambling over rocks, although there are plenty of easier areas to reach if needs require (perhaps something more Gracie-friendly). I suggest an 11am chicken round-up in downtown Grass Valley in order to get a full day of fun and frolicking.

Last year a lot of the socializing wasn't in the dome but in various barns. Thoughts? Opinions?

She adopted me on the spot, named me Stray, and led me to the Karma Chicken Coop, where I was warmly accepted into all of your big, feathery arms. Hanging out with you crazy cats is one of my dearest memories, and I really wish I had made last years burn. But have no fear, because, as the old saw goes, you can't keep a good man down, and that goes double for Chicken Men!!! My ticket is purchased, my ride is set, my bag of tricks is steadily growing, my guitar skills are still terrible, and I am counting down the seconds until I get to live "The American Dream"! I'd love to chill with the chickens this year, so please inundate me with information on how to find you guys. I really, really, REALLY can't wait to see you all again, especially Mark, Affinity, Jill, Dr. Dave, SUPERDAN!!!, Julie, Caz, Mandy, and Tapan (especially you, Tapan, you super-freak), and all the people who got me sooo wasted I forgot them.
I want to throw a Karma Chicken meetup/party. I'm eying April 26th (A Saturday).

I think it would be fun to have some or more of the following:
- Booze
- Food (barbeque?) potluck?
- People bringing their performance art (I hoop)
- Music (I'll DJ some of the time, maybe someone else wants to as well?)
- some costuming, wear something fun!
- More friends - bring friends that aren't necessarily KC
- Starting while the sun is out and ending long past when it is dark
Please chip in ideas! I'd like to reconnect, or newly connect with you folks again.
So I have an opportunity to write a 3 page article for the magazine (ArtisSpectrum) that my art gallery puts out.

It is an interesting opportunity to expose the Burningman thing to an "Art Crowd" that may otherwise have no idea what is going on in Nevada.

So I rather than explain the "structure" of the thing (the dust, light, sounds, nudity, fire, etc.) I was hoping to focus on a more personal aspect of experience....

I'm taking a photojournalistc approach... and interveiwing Burners with the question:

"What is Burningman to you?"

So if you have something to say on this... you might just find yourself quoted in an art magazine...

What is hug nation?(www.hugnation.com)
Hug Nation is a world-wide Group Hug.

Those pesky oceans keep us from doing the weekly hug physically, so we do it virtually. Thousands of people around the world gather in front of computers to hug themselves and the people around them at a set time. Rather than a shared physical space, it is a shared mental space.

Regardless of where you are on Tuesday at 1-pm (PST), you can join the Group Hug.

Squeeze yourself in your car or in the supermarket. Hug your spouse or co-worker. Just visualize the thousands worldwide who are joining you at that moment.

Think of it as a sort of prayer -- a communal expression of compassion. It is a weekly reminder that we are connected and we all far more similar than we are different. Everyone can use a hug.

It was a good year for the Karma Chickens...

Most of you probably opened this thread expecting to hear about somebody losing their underpants (de-brief-ing)... maybe I should change topics now and go into that... but I think you all saw enough of my ass after the ass-less chaps party as I drunkenly crawled from the big dome to the kitchen dome...

So... my briefs back in place ... Here's my take on the burn this year ... I thought about making a MVC (most valuable chicken) award... but I couldn't identify a single person for the title, and it's not a competition anyway - so instead of discussing all the people individually, this is how we did as a group on each of the camp centric features we brought...

Dome - The new thicker dome was great - looked good. The tall ladder and Brad's pre-printed dome construction instructions helped tremendously... we had the dome up and down in record time.

Shade Cloth - I don't think we got the pattern correct on the shade cloth so it was delayed getting up - was very nice once we got it finished. I'm glad we brought 2 new bags of bungee balls, we used them all.

Kitchen - The kitchen dome worked great! I have to admit I was a bit nervous in the high winds, but it held its own and was a very useful place to cook, clean and be happy.

Sink - I liked the sink and the construction / filter was cool but I was sad that it was used poorly. For future reference, a sink on a playa is a great place to clean dishes, but a very poor place to store dirty dishes... I conceived of the idea last year when I saw 3 people washing dishes in nasty plastic buckets... Amy cut the wood to size and pushed the initiative, Brian helped with assembly and paint, Brad put a good filter on it. Next year (drink!!) we'll consider pump pedal water, better counter space, and such... the survival of the sink initiative depends upon Chicken feedback and usefulness...

Power - Grade A++ Organic Large Eggs!! Worked great - Brad's solar panels and the power station were fantastic. With only minor wiring and placement changes for next year (drink!) we'll be able to improve and have room for growth. Next Year (drink!) I suspect we'll have more invertors available for regular power plugs around the camp.

Sound - Between Jill's great music lists and Chips excellent amp, we had great music for days... Loved the tunes! A high efficiency pure sine wave inverter would be nicer on Chip's power conditioner... and next year (drink!) If we bring a subwoofer, then John is planning to spin some music for us... so we'll want a better table and platform for him to work... maybe a DJ booth attached to the side of the dome (easy to do with a bit of PVC, some flashy lights, some knots, and a tarp...)

Battery Box - Worked Great but took too much setup time on the playa. It'll be better next year (drink!)... more of a drop off the trailer and be done with it all thing. I've got good solutions already on order for rapid hookup and teardown of the box... no more sitting in the sun for 2 hours. Better Generator section needed, it helped the sound but did not allow enough ventilation for the running engine to work properly, stalled out the generator several times.

Location - Caz raced in and got us a sweet spot at 4:20 and K... loved the location. Next year (drink!!) maybe we'll keep it for the good parts or maybe we'll move around to try something new... hard to tell until then... more foot traffic and people watching the closer we go... more quiet and less dust the further out... hard to balance.

Layout - Special thanks again to Dr. Dave for giving us a good starting layout... we adapted it dramatically due to only having 1 dome, but just having the general idea already in our head helped immensely. Dave did a lot of prep work for us and helped a lot... even though he wasn't able to get to the playa himself this year... it made for a more enjoyable time for the rest of us.

Shower - The shower was nice... calm, cool, refreshing. A slightly larger plastic area around the pallet would be good for spillage, but the PVC system Amy developed worked very well. (Of course, if we keep throwing Costo Barns at the shower, it's going to keep breaking... but aside from that expected failure mode it is a good shower system.)

Evap Pool - Chip's evap pool was awesome!! The bilge pump was quiet, the dripping water was calming... we had a few gallons of grey water / sludge at the end, but that took up less room than the huge folded up black plastic from the previous year... Kudos to Chip and Linda for excellent design and implementation. The Sink strainer and the 2nd filter at the evap pond helped keep the tub from getting skanky food smells.

Carpet - Caz donated some great carpet to the dome... I carried it home for use next year (drink!!)... comfy, effective, nice stuff... Ironically even after the burn it's cleaner than my carpet at home...

Food - Oh my word it's hard to describe. Mark we missed you, but since we had warning I think we all prepared very well. This was my best food year ever on the playa... by far... Much thanks to the chefs and group sharing...

Structures - Except for one unfortunate pair of Costo Barns, all the structures in camp fared very well. Brad's unique custom designed shade structure was very clever and I liked it a lot. Amy decorated our barn so well I might just redecorate my bedroom at home to match it (possibly including the alcohol table!!!) The new costco barns pop up much faster than the older ones, but it still took a fair bit of work to set them all up.

Much thanks to all ...
See you Soon....

It's a very old waterbed frame, from when we were first dating. (You can sort of see it in the picture Candace posted of "Chip & Linda's Abode.") It's made of fiberboard and plywood and collapses into a pile. We lost some of the corner hardware, so our "fix" has been to screw drywall screws into 2x4's at each corner. The fiberboard is somewhat rotted, but it looks nice and will probably last a very long time if you only use it once a year at BM. It's nice and stable, and it gets your bed up off the ground. The top is in sections so it can easily be adapted for a twin up to a queen size.

We plan on having it in the back of our van when we go to Amy's going away party on Friday.

American Dream.

What is the American Dream? Homeownership? An education and better life for your children? That flat screen TV you need for watching college ball? Is -that- what those powdered wig-wearing slaveowners and cod fishermen fought the British for all those years ago? Bullshit. The American Dream is democracy- representation of the people, by the people, and for the people.

We were founded as a country where each citizen had some say in our government, where power was not merely inherited, and where edicts were not handed down from kings and dictators, who neither ask for our opinions nor hear our voices. We put the Bill of Rights into our Constitution, one of the first documents granting people rights, based simply on human dignity and fairness, which the government cannot take away. Now our country has come a long way, for the better and for the worse, be we should be proud of the enlightened principles that guided our founders. We should be proud that the only mention of religion in our constitution is to ban the state from establishing it, but we should also be proud that eventually slavery was banned and women were given the vote… and we should be ashamed that we allow our rights to be chipped away at, that what many have died for can be traded away so cheaply.

We should also be ashamed that we live in a dictatorship, be it benevolent or not, and that we say nothing. We consider ourselves citizens, but we do not know our rights. The few control the many. Dissent is stifled. Our money is taken, and we labor for the common good, but we have no say in our government. I speak not of the citizens of America, but rather those of Black Rock City.

BRC is the largest city in the country that does not have elected representatives. Are we a community or are we a cult? Is the man a symbol or is he an idol? Is Larry a founder or is he a prophet? Must participation include submission? Does "counter culture" include forsaking the rights we so easily take for granted? Are some of us truly more deserving than others of having our voice heard?

…or is this America? For all our flaws, for everything that we have done wrong, we have always been a country where every citizen has a right to have his voice heard, to vote, to at least have a chance of effecting the course of our government.

This is a right we do not have at BRC.

I propose, in the spirit of the American Dream art theme for Burning Man 2008, an art project; Free and fair elections, in which any citizen who chooses to vote is given the chance to do so. A city council? Or a Mayor? I'm unsure how best to structure things, but I know few forms of government are worse than dictatorship (corporate dictatorship, at that).

The BORG may attempt to ignore us, but if enough people participate, how can they? This is their theme. They ask us to participate, and to be good citizens. They may be the LLC, but we, we are the city.

It is time for us to decide - will we continue to submit to the will of a corporation, or will we stand up and demand the right that every citizen of every city in this country is entitled to?

Who am I to ask? I am just a citizen of the city, one who sees both the good and the bad in BRC, and would like a peaceful outlet for change. This is not about me or any one individual, it is about the community that we have created, and that community belongs to all of us.

It's also Linda's birthday on the 9th (Sunday) and although she didn't want a fuss made of her I know we can all give her some chicken love.

I have a request - please bring some rope! Soft pliable stuff is best. Come on, I know at least a few of you have it tucked away at home for develish purposes... My honey George expressed a desire for me to keep practising my bondage knots so I don't forget them over the next two weeks. I'm sure you guys would be willing to help me out on that one ;p
Also, if anyone has a card reader for getting photos off digital camera cards please bring it so I can share my photos with y'all. My camera itself seems to defy all attempts to be compatible with any software downloadable or otherwise. Finally, to anyone who feels inclined, it would be lovely to get a CD of your photos to take home and share with the Brits. Thanks and juicy kisses x

2. Make sure no one is standing below you when you un-do the bolt. The heavier struts put holes in the ground when they fall.

Be careful.

Some of you already know what the past several days have been like for me. For others this will be the first time you hear / read this. Last Thursday night I had to take the love of my life, Amber, into the Emergency Room at UC D for emergency surgery. To top it off we had a huge catering gig lined up for Saturday night, that I did not back out of. I did not spend much time with Amber in the hospital because I was running around prepping, packing, unpacking, cooking, serving, packing, and cleaning. I still have LOADS of cleaning to do. Amber will be convalescing with limited mobility at the house for the next six weeks. After weighing out everything in my life, I have chosen to stay at home and take care of her instead of going to Burning Man. Please don’t take this personally; she is more important to me then playing in the desert for a week with some of my favorite people.

I am sorry to be breaking this news to you right before the burn like this. This weekend, I will make myself available to assist the Karma Chickens in getting out to the playa. I’ll post in the other threads to discuss what I have been working on this year and how I can help:

The new dome for the hammock….
The evap pond….
--->My trailer is available for use if anyone wants to take it up.

I hope you all have a great time out there.

Just wanted to ask whether they will be available again or if I should run to Dnaios (sp?) flea market on Friday. Does anyone know who carries them at the flea market. Should I head for one of the fabric sellers? Do they have special camping supply places? I got no idea!

We'll probably come up sometime on Monday. Will we be monitoring walkie-talkies? Will we be camping near the same area as last year? (I liked it a lot being on that side of BRC - less dusty!)

I just posted a sketch of the camp layout. It's what we envisioned the camp looking assuming you get the area you want. The dome with the lightshow is the center piece. There is a open area around it for bike parking and for art cars to enter. The driveway will be 10 ft wide and flanked by small solar lanterns. The kitchen dome and the hammock dome are set back and connected by either a hut-walkway or a large shade tarp tied to the two domes. Behind that is the storage tent/structure. Barns, huts, tents, and RVs are placed up the sides.

The pond, generator, and solar panel are stuck away in the corner for noise/smell abatement. Note-we have never really had a pond stink before, but no one likes to camp next to it anyways. Park the only cars around the pond and panel, nothing big that cast shadows over pond and panel.

It should take up about 180 x 150 feet, a little smaller than last year. The layout assumes the same location as last year ~4:10 which put us due south of the Man. Winds came out of the W & NW. If you get a new location, adjust for the wind.

Most of all, be flexible because nothing ever goes as planned. Enjoy.

Executive summary:
* we'll have 200W of solar power this year!
* powering the dome light show system with it
* there'll be enough left over for charging camera/radio/light batteries and maybe some fans.
* I'll set out three 12V hubs around the camp for plugging in 12V auto accessories.

Details:

I'm bringing 200W of solar power. I've built a kind of weird frame which allows us to rotate it by hand a couple of times a day to better match the sun. I figure even with no turning and with a little shadowing by tents nearby, we can store about 1200 watt-hours. That means we can run something that uses 100 watts for about 12 hours.

Jack and I are bringing our lighting project which will use about 180 watts. If we run the lighting project about 5 hours a night, that's around 900 watt-hours, leaving us about 300 watt-hours.

That's enough to charge people's camera batteries, run some fluorescent lights, or even run swamp cooler fans for a small part of the day. It's around enough power to recharge 16 AA batteries and also run 4 swamp coolers made from 2 PC fans each for about 5 hours.

So I'm going to provide three hubs around the camp for power. I'll run and bury the cabling. Each hub will be a plastic box with a 12V car plug 1-to-4 splitter. If people want to use a little bit of power to charge batteries or power lights (hopefully fluorescent) in your tent, you can run an 12V auto extension cable from the hub. If you REALLY need real 110V wall power, we can probably provide it for a few things but we'd like to avoid the situation where someone plugs in their hairdryer or microwave and drains the battery in 20 minutes (also setting all our wiring on fire). (I know you all are smart enough that you wouldn't bring a microwave.)

In the event we find ourselves really short on sun power, Jack will top off the battery from his generator. Jack also says he may provide a battery charger at the power box near the "public dome".

If you *do* use power from the camp power system, I would ask that you occasionally check out the solar panels and rotate them to face the sun. If half a dozen of us check it out once a day each, we'll really increase the power we store from the sun. I'll send out some pictures early next week of the solar panel array.

(If things go well this year, maybe next year we can run cute little 110V power outlets to everyone's tents.)

As an aside, solar panels are very expensive and not particularly efficient. I say this not to bring attention to the cost but rather to explain why we have so little solar power available. 200W of solar panels is more than 16 square feet (basically a square 4 feet on a side) and a watt of solar panel costs around $4. I'm still excited about the idea of almost-completely-free power, so one of my gifts to the camp this year is the power system. Afterwards I get to take it home afterwards and plan to power some of my computer equipment with it.

I didn't write this, but loved it and decided to pass it on. Giving a shout out to "oh Tony" who posted this...thanks!

Hi Everyone,

I posted this on a couple of other tribes and folks said that I should post here as well. I am not a virgin (this will be my sixth burn), but I thought that this might be helpful to BM newbies.

By the way, I envy all of you virgins. Although, every Burn is diffferent, the first is always super special.

See you on lthe playa,

OhTony

_________________________________________
As a single, hetero man, I know from experience that Burning Man can be a wonderful and crushing experience. Usually both, often at the same time. I can hardly think of a single guy who has shown up at the playa alone and not wanted to hook up with someone. The fact is, this desire can ruin your BM experience (actually, it just makes you think that your experience is ruined). I have found that there are lessons that I have had to learn multiple times. After last year, as soon as I got back, I made notes to myself for this year, while the experience was still fresh in my mind. Now, as the burn approaches, I am taking what I have learned this year and adding to last year’s notes. I thought to myself, “I wish someone had told me this stuff before I went to Burning Man.” So, I decided to post it here. Many points have been offered by other people at one time or another. This is just my collection.

Be present.
This is, in my opinion, the most important thing. As in the default world, all we really have at Burning Man is the now. You can’t even say that you will have 7 days of nows, because anything could happen. So, just experience every single moment fully. If you find yourself thinking about how sweet it would be to hook up with that hottie you just met or how it would suck if she didn’t show up when you guys were supposed to meet, stop. Look around. Burning Man is happening all around you right now. Experience it. Now. This is why you came. Don’t miss it. If you put being at Burning Man above getting laid at Burning Man, you will have a far richer experience. And, you will increase your chances of getting laid at Burning Man.

When in doubt, say “Yes”
When offered anything, material, interactional or spiritual at Burning Man, unless you think that that this would be a “bad thing” for you, say “yes”. Yes opens up new possibilities. Yes is fun. And, Yes is usually sexy. Conversely, if you don’t think it’s a good thing for you, then definitely say no. Multiple times, and loudly if need be.

Have no expectations.
Expect nothing, not even a good time or a shitty time at Burning Man. Expect nothing from others. Especially, do not expect to have sex at Burning Man. Even if you go with a lover or possible lover, do not expect to have sex with them, or anyone else for that matter.

Be prepared
The other side of the expectation rule. Understand the difference. Do not expect to hook up with someone, but be prepared if you do. Bring what you need. Get tested, if you haven’t already.

Give
Give your time, your attention, your trinkets, your love, your admiration, your beer, your energy, your opinion, your hand, your heart, your enthusiasm. Give everything you can think of.

Make contact
Talk to as many interesting people as possible. Then, talk to some people that you would normally talk to. Always have a notepad and something to write with. Take pictures of people and take notes to go with them. Get email/phone numbers.

Use alternatives to sex
You don’t have to have intercourse to be intimate with someone. Massages are, of course, a good option. One of my favorites is the foot bath. Bring a small tub and some nice soap and lotion for after. Also, there is cuddling, eye-gazing, you get the point. Often, it is the non-sexual play that leads to other things. If not, well, it’s all good anyway.

Take responsibility for your joy
If you find yourself in a situation that you don’t want to be in, don’t not blame others. Blame, anger will probably not make anything any better. So, take responsibility for your attitude, your survival, your joy. Remember that you always have three choices: Accept the situation, change the situation or leave the situation. Pick one of the three, then be at peace.

For example, here’s a personal tip. I set a waiting time for meet-ups. For me, it’s 15 minutes. If someone says that they will meet me at a certain time, and they are not there, or we miss each other for whatever other reason, after 15 minutes, I’m free to do whatever I want (including waiting longer). In any case, it takes away any anger or disappointment. It puts me in control. And, while I’m waiting, I am fully experiencing the moment.

Communicate clearly
In your dealing with people, make sure that you are clear in your intentions. Make no assumptions. Ask the questions you need answers to. Be tactful, but direct. Clear communication is sexy.

Use drugs wisely
If you use drugs, then plan your drug usage ahead of time. Consider doing no drugs at all. There’s nothing worse that happening upon a possible playa buddy, then being too fucked up to have any fun.

Keep a journal
A journal will prove invaluable to you, even if you never go to Burning Man again. It is so easy to forget all of the thoughts you had on the playa. Don’t wait until you get back to camp to write. Jot a quick note down in the moment.

Get rest
You cannot go to The Deep End every afternoon, then go out dancing every night. You must plan for down time. You should not dance until sunrise unless you can sleep late the next day. Get plenty of sleep before you drive home.

Don’t fuck people in your camp.
If you can avoid it, “Don’t shit where you eat.” Understandably, sometimes, you just gotta do what you gotta do. But, there are thousands of other people in BRC. Inter-camp hook-ups usually end up badly.

Read, then keep “The Four Agreements”
If you haven’t read “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz, I highly suggest it. It’s a quick, but invaluable read. If you aren’t driving, you can probably finish it on the way to Burning Man. If you are driving, get the audiobook. In any case, it puts you in a great headspace when you hit BRC.

Don’t forget the art
Burning Man is one of the most amazing art exhibits in the world. Experience as much of it as you can. Interact with it. Take pictures of it. Talk about it with other people who are experiencing it with you. This is one lesson that I forget every year.

Be grateful
Do you realize how lucky/blessed you are to be at Burning Man? Then give thanks, to the the people who sell you ice, to the Rangers, to your campmates, to the stranger who is now a friend, to (your dogma here) for creating the playa, the sky above it and the mountains that surround it. Make sure that you thank yourself as well. Give thanks, verbally and in your heart. You can’t do it enough.

I nicknamed her "SpiderMonkey" because of how quickly and skillfully she could climb up the dome structure. This was harder than it looked because you couldn't step onto the middle of any struts without bending them. She finally gets to return to the playa and bring her husband along.

>As it turns out, events have conspired to inspire Scott and I to possibly try getting up to Burning Man this year. I guess the question is do the >Karma Chickens have space for more people in your camp, and if so, what do we need to do to help you guys prepare for BM? I know the >tickets are sort of expensive now but that's okay with us. Hope to hear from you soon.

Sorry for the short notice. I am seeking volunteers for this Saturday’s Karma Chicken Dome building Day! As I have mentioned before, my intention is to build a much stronger dome to replace the one that got all bent up in the wind/dust storm and hammock testing last year. This Saturday (August 4th) Milo has allowed me(us) to use his dad’s workshop to build another dome for the Karma Chickens. I will require 2 to 4 people willing to help ALL day long this Saturday. The workshop is up country so we will leave as soon as possible on Saturday morning. I am happy to have anyone that wants to help just stay the night Friday night.

I’m stoked that we’ve got this day to work on it as the new dome as it will be ready for use for the Karma Chicken fund maker party.

Please post here or call me if you are able to assist.

Thanks,
~Mark

The downside is that no one gets any time off from mid-August until November. During the harvest we will be crushing and "wining" 5 or 6 days a week with lots of overtime.

Which means I get to join the long list of Chickens not going to BurningMan this year. (%$@^!!!!*&*%) It sucks but I chose this career for myself so I ain't crying (much). Instead I will live vicariously thru your exploits ... and PHOTOS. Take lots of them. And since I will be living the Burn second hand, turn the dial up to "11" and live large, hug strangers, and get naked (not necessarily in that order).

I can still be help out with planning and stuff like that (Karma Chicken Auxillary). But someone else will have to build the pond and shower. I have some sanitation ideas for this year and will post them under a separate thread later.

Are you folks up for a newbie in the camp?
how can i pitch in if you are?
